Isotonix® Daily Essentials Kit
What Makes the Isotonix® Daily Essentials Kit Unique?
There’s nothing more important than taking care of yourself on a daily basis. With the Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit, you can be sure that you’re giving your body the essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients it needs, thanks to four essential supplements – Isotonix OPC-3®, Isotonix Multivitamin, Isotonix Advanced B-Complex and Isotonix Calcium Plus – to promote long-term health and optimal nutrition.

Plus, by purchasing the Isotonix Daily Essentials Kit instead of buying these products individually, you save nearly 31%!

Caring for your general health starts with Isotonix OPC-3, a powerful antioxidant that provides for the maintenance of good health. Isotonix OPC-3 helps the body function at its peak by combating free radicals throughout your body.

Next, Isotonix Multivitamin contains essential vitamins and minerals to complement your diet. With today’s fast-paced lifestyles, it is important to ensure the body is getting the fuel it needs. Isotonix Multivitamin supplements dietary deficiencies and helps maintain normal metabolic functioning.

To provide the energy you need to function throughout the day, this kit includes Isotonix Advanced B-Complex. B-vitamin deficiency can lead to fatigue and lethargy, which is why B-complex supplements are excellent energy boosters and anti-stress formulas.

Finally, Isotonix Calcium Plus delivers a potent package of calcium and complementary nutrients to keep your bones strong. While calcium supplements in tablet form can be difficult for the body to absorb, the unique Isotonix delivery system and the inclusion of beneficial vitamins and minerals – including vitamin D – make Isotonix Calcium Plus more readily available and easily absorbed by the body.

With this 90 day kit, you will not only receive the nutritional support you need to lay a solid foundation to start every day, but you also save money.

Primary Benefits of Isotonix® Daily Essentials Kit:
·         Great savings! You save nearly 31% - a $70.45 value!
·         Essential vitamin and mineral supplementation
·         Supports cardiovascular health
·         Reduce tiredness and fatigue by enhancing energy production
·         Helps normal functioning of muscles, strong bones and teeth
·         Helps maintain immunity and antioxidant protection
·         Frequently Asked Questions about the Isotonix® Daily Essentials Kit:

·         Can the Isotonix® Daily Essentials Kit products be taken at the same time?
Yes. The Isotonix Daily Essentials Health Kit products can safely be taken at the same time, provided that one follows the recommended serving size for each product.

·         Why are Isotonix® supplements better than standard supplements?
Isotonix® formulas are more effective than standard supplement formulas because they offer the best way to get the maximum delivery of vitamins and minerals into the bloodstream. Isotonix formulas are also the fastest and most effective way to receive vitamins, minerals and nutrients. The stomach has very little work to do because the pH and tonicity are carefully designed to allow the stomach to quickly release all the nutrients into the small intestine. With the Isotonix formulas, this process takes about five minutes, where a standard vitamin tablet can take up to four hours.

What sets Isotonix® OPC-3 apart from other bioflavonoid products?
Isotonix® OPC-3 offers scientifically-supported oligomeric proanthocyanidins, or OPCs, found to be the most powerful antioxidants for human health. This selection of Pycnogenol®*, red wine extract and grape seed extract, is unique to Isotonix OPC-3, as is the Isotonix delivery system, which enables rapid and highly efficient absorption of the OPCs. These potent nutrients, in combination with the highly effective delivery system, makes OPC-3 a powerful free radical scavenging product.
·         Why do I need to take a multivitamin?
A good quality vitamin and mineral supplement creates a sound micronutrient foundation to accompany a balanced diet. Vitamins and minerals help to support a healthy immune system, promote the conversion of food into energy, support a healthy cardiovascular system, support strong bones, promote mental clarity, maintain normal metabolic functioning, promote healthy growth and repair of tissues, help maintain normal blood pressure, and help maintain water and electrolyte balance in the body.

·         Why should I take calcium?
According to the Surgeon General, taking a calcium supplement daily is key to preventing and treating calcium deficiency, and to helping reduce the risk of osteoporosis. Clinical studies indicate that women and many aging men are likely to become susceptible to osteoporosis.

Everyone needs calcium. Practically no one ingests enough calcium in their daily diet. Besides being helpful in supporting and maintaining bone integrity, calcium serves a dynamic role as a mineral. It's very important in supporting the activity of many bodily enzymes and maintaining proper fluid balance. Isotonix Calcium Plus also promotes the normal contraction of skeletal and muscle.
·         Are there any warnings or contraindications for the products in the Isotonix® Daily Essentials Kit?
Isotonix® OPC-3, Isotonix Multivitamin, Isotonix Advanced B-Complex and Isotonix Calcium Plus are vegetarian products, and contain no wheat, gluten, soy, yeast, artificial flavor, starch, salt, preservatives or milk.
·         If you are currently using any prescription drugs, have ongoing medical condition, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should consult your healthcare provider before using these product.

Prime Joint Support Formula by Isotonix®

What Makes Prime™ Joint Support Formula by Isotonix® Unique?

As the body ages, many people experience joint discomfort. One option is to take a joint supplement to help promote overall bone and joint health. When looking at a joint supplement, there is one main non-controversial ingredient found in most products on the market, glucosamine.
http://ca.shop.com/alikoshoppingmall/644795705-0-FAQ-p+898.xhtml?vid=243360
The research behind glucosamine is consistent and its benefits effective. Prime Joint Support Formula contains glucosamine, naturally produced by the body and a key component of cartilage. An aminomonosaccharide (a combination of the amino acid — glutamine and a sugar — glucose), glucosamine is concentrated in joint cartilage and has been scientifically proven to support healthy joint function and promote the normal production of synovial fluid, which lubricates your joints and regenerates cartilage.

Prime Joint Support Formula also contains the powerful antioxidant Pycnogenol®, which science has shown to inhibit the body’s overactive inflammatory processes associated with the normal aging process.
http://ca.shop.com/alikoshoppingmall/644795705-0-FAQ-p+898.xhtml?vid=243360
The body’s inflammatory response is a natural process. It is an essential component of the body’s defense system and can be triggered from numerous internal and external factors. Pycnogenol has been shown to help support the body’s defense system by inhibiting overactive inflammatory responses associated with the normal aging process.

Furthermore, Prime Joint Support Formula is the only product on the market delivering glucosamine and Pycnogenol in isotonic form.

Isotonic, which means “same pressure,” bears the same chemical resemblance of the body’s blood, plasma and tears. All fluids in the body have a certain concentration, referred to as osmotic pressure. The body’s common osmotic pressure, which is isotonic, allows a consistent maintenance of body tissues. In order for a substance to be absorbed and used in the body’s metabolism, it must be in an isotonic state.

Isotonix dietary supplements are delivered in an isotonic solution. This means that the body has less work to do to obtain maximum absorption of the nutrients. The isotonic state of the suspension allows nutrients to pass directly into the small intestine and rapidly absorb into the bloodstream. With Isotonix products, little nutritive value is lost, making the absorption of nutrients highly efficient while delivering maximum results.

Glucosamine (HCl): 1500 mg
Glucosamine is a molecule that is naturally synthesized in the body from glucose and the amino acid glutamine. Glucosamine is an important constituent of glycosaminoglycans in cartilage matrix and synovial fluid. As our bodies age, we are less able to produce glucosamine, resulting in cartilage that is less flexible and weak. Although the mechanism is currently unclear, studies have shown that glucosamine supplementation can support normal, healthy cartilage cell production to help maintain overall joint health.
·

Pine Bark Extract (Pycnogenol®): 37.5 mg
Pycnogenol is a water-soluble flavonoid complex with powerful benefits. Pycnogenol, similar to the proanthocyanins found in grape seeds, is extracted from the bark of the French maritime pine tree. Numerous studies have examined the anti-inflammatory properties of Pycnogenol.

The body’s inflammatory response is a natural process. It is an essential component of the body’s defense system, and can be triggered from numerous internal and external factors. Pycnogenol has been shown help maintain the body’s natural defenses by inhibiting over active inflammatory responses associated with the normal aging process. Research has shown that Pycnogenol may inhibit the activation of NF-kappa B and AP-1, both of which are proinflammatory mediators. Pycnogenol supplementation can also promote normal COX-2 and 5-LOX gene expression and support healthy leukotriene biosynthesis. In addition, studies have shown the ability of Pycnogenol to cross-link collagen fibers and strengthen connective tissue proteins.

There’s an Easy Way to Protect Wealth… Yet, Many Don’t Use It
Written by Grant Hicks

Part of protecting wealth is protecting your privacy. Yet, any stranger can pay a fee and receive a copy of a probated will. After all, it is in public domain.
In a probated will, you see lists of assets, who the beneficiaries are and the amounts they receive. You see where and how the money was invested and the type of investments held. If you have a sizeable estate, would you want every family member and the world to know?
For some, this may cause great family feuds, leaving more problems behind to worry about today. Is this what you want to think about for your estate? There may be a better way for you.
Investing with a life insurance company( CIBC WOOD GUNDY) into a GIC, annuity or segregated fund portfolioallows you to make a beneficiary designation.
Bingo, the privacy issue is avoided. Since it acts as a life insurance contract, it is between you and the beneficiary. The investment is not probated and the privacy issue is carefully avoided.
Seniors who discover the benefits such as privacy, probate and 100% guaranteed death benefit with their funds soon discover that Canadian life insurance companies have helped people protect their wealth for decades, making it an easy way to protect your wealth. With GICs the rate is guaranteed for the term you choose, say one to ten years. They are also deposit insured up to certain limits per account. With segregated funds, there are some additional benefits:
·         100% of your investment guaranteed upon death to your beneficiaries, no loss of capital upon death.
·

·         A maturity guarantee of 100% of your principal investment regardless of stock or bond market conditions.
·

·         While your investment grows, so does your guarantees upon maturity and to your beneficiaries, thus locking in future profits for you and your family.
·

·         Creditor protection for professionals and small business owners. Under the insurance act, you have the potential to protect those investments from creditors. A professional such as accountant, dentist, doctor or small business owner may benefit.
·

·         Finally the investment benefits.
·          You have the security of the written guarantees, the estate planning and creditor benefits, plus you also have access to most of the top performing investment managers available to build a truly diversified and well managed portfolio.

Insurance & AnnuitiesCapture The Investment Potential Of Insurance

In building a profitable portfolio, smart investors spread their assets over a variety of investments to be able to benefit from the higher returns of equities and the safety of fixed income investments. This makes perfect sense because over the long term diversification has proven to be a prudent approach to successful investing. To their loss, some investors avoid investments that can deliver higher returns because they can't deal with the potential volatility. What they don't realize is that they are forfeiting the opportunity to grow their assets in a bid to protect themselves from possible loss.
One solution to this dilemma of growth versus safety is to incorporate insurance into your financial plans. Insurance policies can enable you to build or maintain your wealth, while limiting risk to your capital. This strategy can work especially well in later years when you need to protect your investments for today – and for your beneficiaries when you're gone.
Get Connected To Insurance Solutions

Life insurance has often been overlooked as a source of investment opportunities. Now, especially with a rapidly growing retirement population, there's increasing awareness that some life insurance offerings are specifically designed with an investment and a life insurance component. In some cases, the investments that can be held have the potential to deliver higher returns than the more popular investment vehicles
These include guaranteed investment annuities (GIA), segregated funds and insured annuities. And with insurance, you also gain the benefit of arranging your affairs and selecting your investments to achieve certain desirable results for your estate on your death.
Let's Talk About The Possibilities

Through our partnerships with strong insurance companies in Canada, we can provide you with access to the possibilities that life insurance can offer. Sorting through all the investment choices available to you can be time consuming and difficult – even more so when they include an insurance component. Life InsuranceGet The Most Out Of Life

You've attained the good life: Earning a good income, accumulating a sizable portfolio, paying off your liabilities and maximizing your RRSP contributions. Along with your financial success comes increased taxes and the worry of protecting your assets today and in the future. Without proper preparation, the good life you've worked so hard to create could be short-lived.
One solution to decrease the likelihood of this happening is life insurance When many people think of life insurance, they only consider its ability to protect against the unexpected. While this is true, life insurance is a powerful financial tool that can also do double duty as an effective investment vehicle. And it can safeguard your wealth as well as potentially minimizing your taxes.
Protect And Grow Your Assets

Some types of insurance are strictly geared to protecting your assets. However, universal life insurance goes beyond that to offer a savings component along with life insurance and can also be useful for estate planning. Universal life insurance combines permanent life insurance with tax-advantaged investment options in one policy. You can benefit from considerable choice and flexibility in investment selection, premium amount, and death-benefit options. Other advantages include:
§  Tax-sheltered investing and tax-free payout to the beneficiary
§  Investment has the potential to fund the cost of the premium
§  Relatively unrestricted switching of investment options
§  Investments may be withdrawn (subject to taxes) before the death of the policy holder
Let's Work Together

Not all universal life policies are created equal. We partner with all the top insurance companies in Canada to be able to bring you a wide breadth of policies. We can provide the expertise to help you design a universal life policy that is optimally suited to your lifestyle. Your CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Advisor can introduce you to a qualified Estate Planning Specialist (Financial Security Advisor in Quebec). To find out how we can help you, use our Find An Advisor tool to contact a CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Advisor near you.
AnnuitiesSafeguard Your Income For Life

Many of us dream of filling our retirement years with leisurely activities, travels around the globe or simply taking the time to enjoy life. Just because you have significant funds and income to pursue your retirement aspirations doesn't mean you're safe from outliving your savings and also reducing the assets you pass on to your loved ones. Enjoyment of your later years could be severely reduced without proper planning.
Investment solutions offered by insurance companies could help you protect your income during your lifetime while providing benefits for your estate. Life insurance policies like a guaranteed investment annuity (GIA) or if you are insurable, an insured annuity, can go a long way to protect your savings during your lifetime and beyond.
Invest For Income With A GIA

An estate-friendly equivalent to a guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) is a guaranteed investment annuity (GIA). With a GIA, you can also purchase a guaranteed rate of return with a corresponding term of maturity. The maturity term is usually one to 10 years, but can extend to 15, 20 or more. GIAs offer many advantages:
§  Choice of income paid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually, or compounded
§  Ability to designate a beneficiary under the annuity contract to avoid probate and other costs (probate fees do not apply in the province of Quebec)
§  Creditor protection, providing certain criteria are met
Get The Benefits Of An Insured Annuity

An insured annuity is essentially a life annuity and a term 100 life insurance policy, purchased together. An annuity provides a guaranteed regular income stream, while a term 100 life insurance policy provides a cash payout upon death. The combination of the benefits is ideal for those seeking guaranteed income and the preservation of their capital. Benefits include:
  Guaranteed, regular lifetime income
  Preservation of capital
Ability to bypass the process and cost of probate and other estate-settlement costs
We only work with the leading companies in the insurance business to be able to bring you the most effective solutions that are right for your needs.
Make The Most Of Your Opportunities

Segregated FundsA Way To Build Wealth And Limit Risk

If you're looking for a unique investment opportunity that combines potential for growth with peace of mind, segregated funds could work for you. Segregated funds are professionally managed investment funds that give investors the opportunity to build wealth while minimizing their risk. Though similar in many respects to mutual funds, segregated funds offer investors some distinct benefits.
The Potential To Secure Your Gains

In addition to the strong opportunity for growth offered by equity mutual funds, segregated funds provide potential protection against downturns in the stock market on maturity or the death of their owner. This is possible because they offer a reset feature that enable you to lock in your gains. By combining the protective benefits of an insurance contract with the investment performance potential of mutual funds, segregated funds can be an effective strategy for long-term investing.
As an investor, you benefit from the ability to:
Protect your principal by locking in gains
Avoid probate fees (do not apply in Quebec) by naming a beneficiary if you are the named owner
Potentially protect your assets from creditors
Take Control Of Your Portfolio

Leading mutual fund companies and institutional investment managers have joined forces with insurance companies to provide investors with the flexibility to build a highly diversified portfolio by offering segregated funds. Much like with mutual funds, professional money managers make investment decisions based on the objectives and the management style of the fund. However, you maintain control through the ability to allocate your investment over the major fund categories and to change the asset mix of your funds.
We Can Help

We can offer you a broad range of segregated funds issued by Canada's top insurance companies. Your CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Advisor will help you determine if segregated funds are a suitable investment vehicle to assist you in meeting your investment goals and objectives. To find out how we can help you, use our Find An Advisor tool to contact a CIBC Wood Gundy Investment Advisor near you.

What Makes Isotonix Digestive Health Formula Unique?

Isotonix Digestive Health Formula, an isotonic-capable food supplement, is a blend of amylase, protease, cellulase, lactase, maltase, sucrase and lipase enzymes. Enzymes are important for the body’s proper absorption and utilization of food. Over time, the body’s ability to make certain enzymes decreases as part of the natural aging process. Many scientists now believe that maintaining normal levels of key enzymes is important to maintaining overall health. Enzymes are responsible for every activity of life including proteases (aid in digesting protein), amylases (aid in digesting carbohydrates), and lipases (aid in digesting fats) which are digestive enzymes, which function as the biological catalyst to breaking down food.

In order for a substance to be absorbed and used in the body’s metabolism, it must be transported in an isotonic state.

Contains a digestive blend of amylase, protease, cellulase, lactase, maltase, sucrase and lipase enzymes
Superior Isotonix delivery system with fast absorption of nutrients
         No binders or fillers
         Great tasting!
Key Ingredients of Isotonix Digestive Health Formula:

Amylase

Amylases are enzymes that break down carbohydrates so the body can more easily absorb them. This process is completed when amylase catalyzes the hydrolysis of alpha-1, 4-glycosidic linkages of polysaccharides to yield dextrins, oligosaccharides, maltose and D-glucose. Amylases are derived from animal, fungal and plant sources.

Protease
Proteases are enzymes that break peptide bonds between amino acids in proteins. Proteases occur naturally in all organisms and are involved in a multitude of physiological reactions from simple digestion of food proteins to highly complex functions (e.g., blood clotting).

Lactase
Lactase are enzymes are involved in the hydrolysis of lactose into the smaller sugars galactose and glucose. In humans, lactase is present in the small intestine. Lactase is essential for digestive hydrolysis of lactose in milk. Deficiency of the enzyme causes lactose intolerance; many people become lactose intolerant as adults.

Lipase
Lipase is an enzyme that aids in the digestion of lipid (fat) substrates. Pancreatic lipase (HPL) is a lipase acts to convert triglyceride substrates found in oils from food to monoglycerides and free fatty acids.

Pancreatic lipases are found in the spaces outside of cells and have roles in the metabolism, absorption and transport of lipids throughout the body. Lipases are involved in diverse biological processes ranging from routine metabolism of dietary triglycerides to cell signaling and inflammation.

Cellulase
Cellulase is an enzyme which breaks down cellulose to beta-glucose. Humans do not produce cellulase in their bodies and are, therefore, unable to use most of the energy contained in plant material. Cellulase is a plant enzyme that aids in the digestion of fibrous substances. Cellulase is used as a digestive aid and for the management of flatulence. The activity of cellulase is expressed in cellulose units or CU.

Maltase
Maltase is an enzyme that aids in the digestion of the disaccharide maltose. Maltase works by separating the bonds in maltose to produce glucose.

Sucrase
Sucrase is the enzyme involved in the breakdown of sucrose to fructose and glucose.

Frequently Asked Questions about Isotonix Digestive Health Formula:
What are Digestive Enzymes?
Digestive enzymes are special catalytic proteins that help our bodies break down food to utilize the complete spectrum of nutrients in the food we eat. Isotonix Digestive Health Formula acts to supplement and maximize the activity of the body’s own enzymes in an easy-to-take, pleasant-tasting drink.

Isotonix Digestive Health Formula provides additional digestive enzymes for the body in order to maximize the absorption of nutrients from the food we eat.

How do enzymes function in the body?
Enzymes are the workhorses of our cells. They are proteins that catalyze many thousands of biochemical reactions in the body. While most enzymes work inside our cells, digestive enzymes operate outside the cells in the gastrointestinal tract.
The start of digestion begins with digestive enzymes secreted by salivary gland cells into our mouths. Cells lining the gastrointestinal tract also contribute enzymes, such as pepsin in the stomach. In addition, digestive enzymes are produced in the pancreas and are emptied into the upper part of the small intestine.
These enzymes help to break apart proteins, allowing the body to optimize its effort to digest proteins from plant and animal sources as well as break down starch, lactose, fats and nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). The result is a more complete digestive process, resulting in better nutritional absorption.
Isotonix Digestive Health Formula supplies enzymes that are not inactivated by stomach acid. What this means is that the supplemental enzymes mix with and work in concert with the ingested food and begin to work with the body’s own digestive enzymes to release as many of the nutrients as possible.

How do we digest food?

Even before we eat, our body‘s digestive action begins to take place. Simply smelling food activates our salivary glands ("mouth watering"). As the food enters the stomach, the stomach acid and pepsin work together to begin breaking the food down into material the small intestine (where most nutrients are absorbed) can use. Enzymes specific to each of the three nutrient groups are released at this stage, further breaking down the food, and contributing to the digestive and absorption processes. These processes continue into the large intestine until the food’s nutritional content is extracted by the body.

What are the three basic enzymes and the four specialty food enzymes?

There are three basic food enzymes that help us digest our food. Each has a specific function and purpose, and each is necessary for the releasing of nutrients into our bodies. They are: protease (which digests proteins), amylase (which digests starch) and lipase (which digests fats). In addition to these basic enzymes, there are also some specialty enzymes including: lactase (for the sugar lactose in dairy products), maltase (for the sugar maltose in foods), sucrase (for table sugar and fruit), and cellulase (which helps us digest cellulose fibres).
Each of these enzymes play a significant part in the body’s overall health by promoting better digestion of food and absorption of nutrients.

Financial Lessons From my Dad

Financial Lessons From my Dad

Financial Lessons From my Dad

Written by Sarah Yetkiner

“A father is his daughter’s first hero.” – Unknown
As children, our parents are the centre of our world. Their words and actions shape our understanding of the world around us and what it takes to be a good person. We learn our relationship and parenting skills from our parents and we also learn how to handle money. No matter how carefully our parents try to tell us the right thing and give us the right advice though, more often than not it is the lessons we absorb from watching their actions rather than listening to their words that make the strongest impression and stick with us as we move into adulthood. Managing the household finances has always been something that my parents did together and seeing the way that my dad always respected and included my mum in all the financial decisions even though he was the main wage-earner taught me that, as a woman, I should never be afraid to take charge of my finances.
Happy Fathers Day!
The fact that this post is about financial lessons I learned from my dad doesn’t mean that I didn’t also learn valuable financial lessons from my mum. I did. However, my dad has been on a challenging journey over the past nine months, so this Father’s Day weekend I am especially keen to celebrate what a huge impact he has had on my life.
I’m very lucky to have a father whose integrity, work ethic and gentle nature has inspired me since I was a child and I have an enormous amount of respect and appreciation for him. However, he is part of a generation that was raised with the belief that money is a subject you keep private and don’t talk about and so most of the financial lessons I’ve learned from him are definitely the result of observation rather than conversation. Here are the first two:
1. If You Want It, You Pay For It
This one might seem like a no-brainer but it’s a lesson that was drilled into each of us as we grew up. When we were young we were given a small amount of “pocket money” each week that we could spend or save as we chose. Once we got older though, if we wanted something that cost more than our weekly allowance we quickly learned that the extra wasn’t coming from Dad; we either needed to save for a really long time or get a job! I started babysitting at 11 and got my first early morning paper route as soon as I was old enough at 13. Once I turned 15 I worked in the family-owned store (at minimum wage) on Saturdays and picked up extra shifts through the summer when the regular staff took vacation. It was just understood among my siblings and I that if we wanted something that wasn’t connected to our education (ie: clothes and gadgets) we had to earn the money to buy it. It’s not that my parents couldn’t afford to buy us what we wanted, they just figured that having to save for things would make us more selective about our “wants” and would help us appreciate our purchases more once we made them.
2. Be a Conscious Spender
I’m pretty sure that my dad’s money personality is ‘Saver’. He’s just one of those people who have a natural instinct for handling money well, combined with a drive to understand different investment options so he can make informed decisions. This natural instinct extended to his spending decisions and, although I didn’t necessarily appreciate his frugality when I was growing up, now I can clearly see how it positively impacted his achievement of his retirement savings goals and his current lifestyle. What I’ve learned from this is that choosing to have some things is better for your financial health than needing to have everything. Dad chose to spend the money he saved on family vacations, a new kitchen or a home renovation rather than a fancy TV, a new car or expensive furniture. Our Christmas gifts were generous but never overly extravagant and eating out was a treat reserved for birthdays rather than a weekly event. I wish I could tell you that it was my Dad’s approach that helped me learn to find pleasure in small treats rather than big splurges and to appreciate the reward of buying something that you’ve saved for but unfortunately it took a spectacular fall into a hole created by Visa to get me to that point! What I can tell you is that, having conquered the credit habit and learned the lesson, I have a much deeper appreciation for the massive benefits that being a conscious spender brings. (I also deeply appreciate the fact my dad can resist using the phrase “I told you so” even when it’s absolutely justified!)

The Power of saying no to children

The Power of saying no to children

Written by Sarah Yetkiner

“We have compassion. We just don’t believe the safety net should be used as a hammock.” – Allen West
Even though it seems counter-intuitive to the idea of helping; sometimes the most powerful thing you can do to help someone is to say no. It can be the hardest thing in the world to say no to someone who you know is in absolute need of your help, especially when you are in a position where helping them is entirely within your abilities. However, being forced into a situation where you have no choice but to take the tough route is often the most powerful factor in creating long-lasting change.
Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve written about five financial lessons I’ve learned from my dad. If you’ve read my posts before, there’s a good chance that you’ll have picked up on the fact that I have a deep admiration for both my parents and in many ways they are the epitome of the values I am building my own life on. We didn’t always get along but as I grow older, my respect for them and understanding of what motivates them has grown and I am blessed that we have such a strong relationship. It’s not always easy though and I think that the fact I live 4000 miles and an ocean away from them definitely helps us appreciate each other in a way that we couldn’t if I still lived close by!
One of the things I appreciate about my parents is that they’ve always allowed me to make my own decisions and supported my choices even when they didn’t agree with me. They’ve watched me fall flat on my face and then supported me in getting back on my feet again, sometimes financially, mostly emotionally and (mostly) without recriminations or an “I told you so”. The knowledge that, no matter what, they would be there to lean on if absolutely necessary has always been a kind of a “safety net” for me. It’s not that I’ve had to lean on them often, or that I make reckless choices but knowing that “net” is there has definitely made walking the tightrope of life a little less daunting. Nine months ago though, everything changed and suddenly I found myself in a situation where, for the first time in my life, I was confronted with the knowledge that even if I needed to turn to my parents for help I wouldn’t be able to.
It’s said that we find our greatest strengths in times of challenge and I believe that’s true. Finding myself in a situation where my safety net no longer existed forced me to a level of independence that I’ve never achieved before and I am definitely much stronger for it. It’s not that I had to manage a disaster, or that I found myself in a place where I needed help and couldn’t ask for it, but the knowledge that I only had myself to rely on forced me to look at my situation in a different light, made me re-evaluate my priorities and gave me a renewed commitment to achieving my financial goals.
As parents our “job” is to protect our children from harm and to take care of them in every way that we can. However, as our children grow older, it can be hard to refuse to give them the help and support that we gave them as younger children and to force them to stand on their own two feet, especially when we know that they’re in need and we have the ability to help. Whether it’s paying off debts, providing free accommodation, subsidizing expenses or always picking up the bill when going out for dinner, parents often find themselves helping out their adult children and more often than not, the helping becomes a habit. I’m not saying that parents shouldn’t help out their children but I wonder if sometimes the most effective way to help is to draw a line in the sand and stand firm in your refusal to be drawn past it. I come across parents all the time who are paying more towards their kids’ expenses than they are towards their own savings goals and parents who are dipping into their own savings in order to help out their children. Regardless of whether the parents are in a position to help or whether they are compromising their own financial future in order to provide assistance, my recent experience of ‘living without the net’ makes me wonder if saying “no” would actually be better in the long run for both the parents and the child. It seems that having no choice but to find your own solution is the most effective way to create permanent change rather than a temporary fix making it a win-win situation for all involved.
What do you think? How much responsibility do parents have to care for their children financially once they reach adulthood? What can we do to help our kids prepare for life ‘without the net’ or should we always be there to step in if necessary? Is there a time and place to say no to children? I’d love to hear your thoughts and stories.

Financial resolution – Get a will

Financial resolution – Get a will

Financial resolution – Get a will

Written by Jim Yih
In financial planning, we spend so much time worrying about accumulating, managing and protecting our assets but spend so little time contemplating how these assets will be distributed when we are gone.
One financial resolution to consider is to get a will in place. At the same time, consider getting a power of attorney and a personal directives and you will have the three key documents for an estate plan.
Dying without a will
If you’ve been thinking that it’s not a problem to die without a will – think again. This “little” oversight can cost thousands of dollars in legal bills, bitter family disputes, as well as legal battles between siblings and/or their spouses. All of this would be avoided with the drafting of a proper will.
When you die without a will, you are said to die “intestate”. Essentially, this means that the Intestate Succession Act governs your estate which can cause problems, frustrations, delays, and add unnecessary costs. Dying intestate means that:
·         You can’t choose who your beneficiaries will be;
·         You can’t choose who will administer your estate;
·         You can’t plan your estate to minimize taxes;
·         You can’t choose a guardian for your children.
Dying without a will means letting the government decide on how your estate will be settled and being charged to have this done?
How much will it cost?
When my wife and I drafted our will, it was about $750 for all three documents. Some lawyers will do it for less and others for more. What I can say about the cost of a will is it is probably the most cost effective route to take. I’ve seen many legal bills far exceed the cost to draft a will when disputes arise because of lack of proper planning and execution. Saving money is always prudent, but paying to have a will correctly drafted is one of the wisest investments you will make!
How of often should you update your will?
According to Marvin Toy, a lawyer who has practiced in the fields of tax law and estate planning for the past 12 years, “well-written wills should be flexible and contemplate future changes in your life. Nevertheless, you should review your estate planning documents when significant changes happen.”
Some examples of changes that can trigger a change to a will are:
·         You get married, separated, divorced or remarried
·         You live with someone in a conjugal relationship for over a year
·         You have a child or a grandchild
·         You have a significant new asset
·         You anticipate financial difficulties in the future
·         You move to another province or country
·         Your health deteriorates
·         Your child gets married, separated, divorced or remarried
·         Your spouse or your child is facing financial difficulties
·         Your spouse or your child develops an addiction (alcohol, drugs, gambling)
·         Your spouse or child dies
·         Your adult child become financially dependent upon you
·         Your child no longer has any contact with you
·         Your executor or trustee moves to another province or country
·         Your executor or trustee becomes elderly, ill, or dies
·         Your executor or trustee no longer has any contact with you
Keep in mind that you can change your existing will or create an entirely new will as often as you’d like.
If you don’t have a will, don’t wait till it’s too late. If you have a will and you have not reviewed it for a while, it’s probably time to pull it out and see if it needs updating.

Misconceptions of estate planning

Many statistics suggest that 6 out of 10 Canadians do not have a retirement plan. What’s scarier is that even fewer have estate plans. When you think about estate planning, what comes to mind? For most people, estate planning is about what happens when you die. Where does your money go? How can you minimize taxes? How can you keep more by paying less?
There’s an old saying that says, “There are only two certainties in life: death and taxes”. For many people, this probably captures the essence of estate planning and why estate planning is important.
There’s no question that estate planning has a lot to do with money, taxes and death. At the same time, estate planning is about so much more. Let’s look at some of the common misconceptions of estate planning.
It’s for the wealthy
The first misconception is that you have to be wealthy to do some estate planning. Whether you have $100,000 or $100,000,000, your money needs to go somewhere. Whether you make $30,000 per year or $300,000, you have to pay some tax. If you have family, any amount of money can become a source of problems and can cause conflicts within perfectly normal families. Most people need a Will no matter how small or big the estate.
It’s for the old
The second misconception about estate planning is that many people think estate planning only happen when you are older. Typically, the older you get, the more you start to think about estate planning because age puts you closer to the reality of death. However, you don’t have to be old to die. Unfortunately for many, death happens too early. For that reason, estate planning should start sooner than later. Planning should happen when you get married and then becomes more important once you have children. The minute you have people that depend on you is the moment you need to start thinking about what happens if you die. How will the people you love (your family) carry on for the rest of their lives?
You have to die
Estate planning is not just about death and taxes. In fact, estate planning is also about protecting you and your family against dependency too. Estate planning is not just deciding what happens when you die. It is also about taking care of you if you become incapacitated by senility or illness whether by old age or a disabling accident. This is why you need an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA) and a Personal Directives (sometimes called a Health Care Directive) to make sure someone is in place to take care of your financial affairs and your health care if you can’t do it yourself. With an aging population, more and more families will be faced with issues of caring for older dependents like parents or spouses. Good estate planning will help families cope in these situations.
Estate planning is about me
Estate planning is all about family. The minute you have family to worry about is the minute you start to think about estate planning. This means making sure the people you love get as much of your estate as possible and in the most helpful way possible. As most people have learned, simply handing over money does not equate with love nor does it equate with taking care of someone. Good estate planning is about keeping families together especially during the difficult emotional period of grieving.
Unfortunately, it does not take much to ignite family feuds. Too often, big fights are caused by little things like incomplete intentions, out-of-date instructions, feelings of inequality, and meaningful possessions that can’t be divided. It is amazing how a little planning, thought and action can help avoid family conflicts.
The bottom line is estate planning is essential so don’t wait to get started.

Common Fears of Estate Planning

No matter how you look at things, Estate Planning involves emotions. Some common emotions include the joy of giving to loved ones, sadness that you won’t be around to see how loved ones might enjoy your gifts, concern about how your beneficiaries will use your money or maybe guilt about not being able to provide enough for your family. One of the most common emotions in estate planning is fear. Let’s look at some of the common fears of estate planning.
1.   Fear of losing capital
Many investors worry that the value of their investments will be eroded with poor investment decisions. For that reason, some people choose more conservative investments.
Protecting an inheritance is relatively simple by using investments that provide a guarantee of capital such as GICs. Segregated funds can also be an excellent estate-planning tool because they provide death benefit guarantee. These respective guarantees ensure that the value of an investment will not end up beneath an established minimum either at the end of the maturity guarantee period or upon the death. The guarantee components make these products an attractive way to ensure that the value of a legacy will not fall below a certain minimum.
2.   Fear of taxes and fees
Declining markets aren’t the only things that can cause the value of an inheritance to shrink. Estates are subject to various taxes and fees that can run into thousands of dollars. Probate fees, executor’s fees, legal and accounting fees can add up quickly. Taxes, however, are often the biggest bite out of an estate.
Certain taxes on death can be avoided by leaving specific assets, including RRSPs and RRIFs, to a spouse instead of another beneficiary. Other costs to the estate can be reduced through careful tax planning that may involve selling assets or transferring them to the beneficiaries before death.
Investments purchased through an insurance company can also help to minimize the impact of estate expenses on the value of a legacy. If a beneficiary is named, the value of a segregated fund or GIC will not form part of the estate and will not be subject to probate because the death benefit will be paid directly to the beneficiaries. As a result, probate, executor, legal and accounting fees are avoided.
Life insurance is another useful tool. If you anticipate a large tax liability on your death, you can prepare in advance to cover these costs by purchasing an appropriate amount of life insurance.
3.   Fear of giving up privacy
When a Will is submitted to the courts for probate, it becomes a matter of public record. That means that anyone – including the general public, the media or even fraud artists – can view a copy of it. The size of your estate, the identity of your beneficiaries and the amount of their inheritance are now in the public domain.
Investments with insurance companies like GICs, segregated funds and life insurance allow assets to be transferred privately outside the public glare of the courts because they bypass probate. They avoid the whole probate process, so their details are not accessible to the public.
4.   Fear of delays
The days and weeks that follow a loved one’s death are extremely stressful. Not only are family members coping with their grief, but they must also arrange funeral and memorial services and put the estate settlement process in motion. Obtaining probate often takes time especially if the estate is complicated or if the Will is challenged.
The key to avoiding delays is to make sure proper planning is done in advance. Make sure your Will is up to date and done properly. Once again, you can use products from life insurance companies to help with efficient transfer of assets.
5.   Fear of giving too much
Sometimes, parents are worried about giving too much money to their children and their ability to manage and invest the money sensibly. They can be concerned that their legacy will be squandered or that their kids may fall under the influence of people who will take advantage of their beneficiaries. They also might fear that their children will lose the drive to succeed if they suddenly receive a large inheritance.
The fact is receiving a sizeable bequest is a tremendous responsibility that some beneficiaries simply aren’t ready to take on. To avoid transferring an inheritance to a specific heir all at once, you can set up a trust. Trusts can be a very effective wealth transfer vehicle, There are some drawbacks that should be carefully weighed, such as cost, complexity and ongoing management.
Fears about estate planning are natural. However, there are many strategies and products that can alleviate your concerns.

Six unconventional estate planning tips

Far too often, going to an estate planning seminar is like watching paint dry because the information is too technical and tax driven. Earlier this year, I was part of an estate planning session that focused on more unconventional estate planning advice filled with lots of common sense. Here are some great tips I got from the speaker Doris Bonora:
1. Clarity and communication should be the goal of estate planning. Far to often we get caught up in the legal and tax implications of estate planning. The whole purpose of an estate plan is to communicate detailed instructions so that your affairs are handled to your satisfaction in case of death or illness.
2. Planning is the least expensive option. When it comes to drafting a will or other estate documents, often people get turned off by the fee that lawyers charge for their services. In my experience, paying a lawyer to draft a will, an Enduring Power of Attorney and a Personal Directives is the least expensive option. I’ve seen Lawyers make a lot more money when people do not have a plan and they have to try to settle disputes that arise from poorly planned estates.
3. With a Personal Directives, appoint people who are health care advocates. A Personal Directives appoints someone to make health decisions if you are unable to make those decisions. Ideally, you want someone that is going to be your advocate and make sure you are getting good care and the right advice. You want someone that will seek more than one opinion even if it requires more effort. That’s who I would want for me.
4. Have a system in the will to deal with personal assets. When it comes to financial assets, it is very common that assets are divided equally. When it comes to personal assets, dividing the grandfather clock or the diamond ring three ways typically does not work. According to Bonora, “it is usually the dividing the personal assets that creates the most trouble with families. As a result, it is important that the will provides a set of rules or a system to deal with dispersing personal assets. In this system it is also important to outline a dispute resolution process. Something as simple as in case of a dispute put your names in a hat and draw names. Making lists of personal assets can be helpful but it is not a system. It is very likely something will be overlooked.”
5. Don’t be afraid to use a trust to manage your estate. When dealing with younger beneficiaries or families of a second marriage, using a trust is very beneficial. Studies show that when people inherit money, 70% of the time, the inheritance is gone within three years. Trusts place stipulations on how inheritances can be used and when it can be used. According to Bonora, “although some people feel it is not appropriate to control money from the grave, it may be one of the best things you can do for the beneficiaries, especially if they are young.”
6. Don’t put funeral directions as part of the will. Often people think that funeral directions should be part of a will but Bonora feels that far too often the will is read after the funeral happens. Part of this is our societal belief that a will should not be read until after a funeral. Since it is important to provide funeral guidance, do it in a separate document and make sure your loved ones know where it is.

Life insurance is the unselfish benefit.  Those that purchase life insurance may not benefit from it.  It’s the beneficiaries that really benefit from life insurance.  Life insurance is one of the few assets that transfers to beneficiaries completely tax free.  As a result, insurance can be a great tool in the estate planning process.
When you think of life insurance, you probably think it is something you need when you are younger — when you have dependents and more debts.  Many experts have argued that you should only buy life insurance when you need it and as a result, they suggest that you should only buy term insurance.  However, we believe that the estate planning reasons to purchase life insurance are much more varied.
When considering insurance as part of your estate plan, it is so important that you consider four key issues.
1.    Do you need insurance?
Just like cereal and milk or strawberries and whipped cream, life insurance and estate planning go really well together.  As we said, the most obvious reason why people buy life insurance is to protect their dependents.  However, there are other equally important reasons why you might want to have life insurance:
·         To cover taxes at death on illiquid assets
·         To pay off debts
·         To cover final expenses like funeral expenses, and lawyer’s and executor’s fees
·         To provide income for your dependents
·         To leave a larger estate for your beneficiaries
·         To create a pool of cash to allow your executor to make things equal for your beneficiaries when some things can’t be divided
·         To help corporations and business arrangements remain viable
·         To help businesses cope with the loss of key people.
Obviously, this list is not exhaustive but it does represent some of the key uses of life insurance in the estate planning process.
2.    The right amount of life insurance
Once you know why you need insurance, you then need to know the right amount of insurance.  This is one of the most important steps in planning for life insurance.  Determining the right amount is not always easy.  We think it’s more of an art than a science.  You need enough to meet your goals, but you don’t necessarily want to buy more than you need.  When in doubt, get help from a professional advisor.
3.    The right type of life insurance
The next issue to consider is the appropriate type of life insurance to use.   Basically, there are two kinds of life insurance:  temporary insurance and permanent insurance.
·         Another name for temporary insurance is term insurance.  Term insurance is the most cost effective type of insurance.  It is designed to protect you for only a temporary period of time.  As you get older, term insurance gets more expensive.  Once you reach 70 or 80 years of age, you will not be able to get any term insurance coverage.
·         The second type of insurance is permanent insurance.  Permanent insurance stays in force until you die.  As long as you pay the premiums, your permanent life insurance policy remains an asset in your estate planning.  The benefit with permanent insurance is a price that is fixed over your lifetime unlike term insurance where the price increases as you get older.  There are three basic types of permanent insurance:  Term to 100, Whole Life, and Universal Life.
Living Insurance
Life insurance contracts are the unselfish benefit because it’s really the beneficiaries that benefit when you die.  Living insurance is a more selfish type of insurance because it pay you before you die.  Two good examples of this are Long Term Care insurance and Critical Illness insurance.
Which type of insurance is best for you?  The answer is found in your reason for buying insurance in the first place.  For example, if you want insurance to pay off your mortgage so your family is not burdened with debt, then term insurance is probably all you need.  On the other hand, if you want insurance to create a bigger estate for your heirs, then a permanent policy is probably more appropriate.
4.    Shop around
Just like anything else in life, not all life insurance products are created equally.  That is especially true when it comes to price.  Once you have an idea of what type of life insurance you need and how much you need, it is critically important to shop around for the best deal.  If you are not sure how to accomplish that, then seek advice from an independent insurance broker who can shop around for you.
Remember that life insurance is a very unselfish financial tool.  We call it unselfish because the greatest benefit typically comes after you die.  Life insurance money does not benefit you as much as it benefits other people – usually the people you love most.

Communication is Essential in Estate Planning

Communication is Essential in Estate Planning

When we think of estate planning, most people think about wills, power of attorneys, personal directives, trusts, and life insurance. Most commonly estate planning centers on how to minimize taxes and probate fees so that beneficiaries can get the most of the estate. While all of these things are important, I think the most important element of estate planning is overlooked.
Communication between generations
When it comes to family finance and money, families tend not to talk. A while back, I mentioned a study suggested that more than one third of parents do not talk to children about money.
Estate planning also involves talking about death. Another topic often avoided by families. A difficult situation such as discussing a loved one’s death can bring out the best and worst in families. The topic is uncomfortable, and also frightening to many. Feelings of resentment and anger can surface, and tension may build. However, through open communication, even the most dismal of circumstances can bring a family closer together and illustrate strength and love.
Death and taxes are inevitable. Confronting death – and the fate of your estate – can quickly quiet a conversation. In the end, it is up to family members to face up to the fact that lack of conversation and an unwillingness to open up can bring devastating consequences. It cannot be assumed that basic estate planning issues will be resolved by simply having a will.
What needs to be discussed?
·         The will. The cornerstone of the estate plan is the will. The will is the formal document that outlines how the assets are dealt with and distributed. Not only is it important to have a will but also important to communicate to your executor and children where they can find a copy of that will. If you make updates or changes to the will, let your family know this has been done.
·         Financial contacts. Do your beneficiaries know how to reach your financial contacts like lawyers, accountants, financial advisors, stockbrokers, life insurance agents, etc.? Do they know who these people are? If you have made changes to some of these advisors, would your executors or beneficiaries know? Lots of seniors deal with two or three different financial advisors that might include a bank representative, a stockbroker, a financial planner and an insurance agent. If your kids live in a different city, that communication gap can get even wider.
·         Funeral arrangements. Funeral arrangements are not usually high on the list of things we want to plan. However, it is important to let your family know if you have some specific wishes. In my case, when my mother passed away, there was real comfort knowing that some of her needs and wants were addressed like knowing she wanted a burial and not a cremation; that she wanted to have flowers; that she wanted her dog present at the service, etc. It was also frustrating for us when a question came up that we did not know what my mother might have wanted. Help your children and spouse to understand what your wants and needs are when it comes to funeral arrangements. If you have already made arrangement through pre-paid funeral services, make sure you notify your beneficiaries so they know who to contact.
·         Contact lists. If you were to die, whom would you like to have notified and whom would you not like to have notified? There are always the obvious people like immediate family. But what about old friends that may want to pay their respects? I recently had a friend who’s cousin passed away and she found out through the newspaper and not through the family. This was somewhat disappointing to her. However, consider that death is a difficult and emotional time. It is difficult to think straight and remember everything that needs to get done and everyone that needs to be contacted. Help your beneficiaries by making a list of phone numbers and contacts and keep a copy of this with the will? It makes sense to make that list when times aren’t so emotional.
·         Financial stuff. Does you family know what you have, where they are and the people to contact if something happens? The financial stuff will include things like life insurance policies; group benefit plans from work, pension plans, RRSPs and investments, savings bonds, property, royalties, and bank accounts. Usually, the bigger accounts and items are well diarized. It is the small stuff that can get overlooked. For example, seniors often have multiple banks accounts because they do not want to keep all their eggs in one basket. Often these accounts can be forgotten because the point was also to keep them a secret.
Breaking the silence
Its time to break the silence and get families to communicate better about finance, estates and money.
